Grades 3-4
Home Up Our School Teaching Community News and Events

In Grade 3-4 our focus is on the transition from teacher-guided lessons to independent, student-guided activities. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their own learning by choosing the material that suits their interests and adds to their enthusiasm about the topic.  Students also become involved in peer teaching, where they share their expertise with others in the class.

The Early Years Literacy and Numeracy programs continue throughout these years, with a focus on further developing students' fundamental language and mathematical skills. At the same time, children are introduced to more advanced, independent literacy and numeracy activities. They are encouraged to become critical readers and to analyse and challenge the attitudes, values and beliefs that lie beneath the surface of written texts.  They learn how to write in different styles and with a different vocabulary depending on their purpose and intended audience. Similarly, in mathematics, students are introduced to higher-level skills and methods and are provided with open-ended tasks that challenge them to use their mathematical knowledge to predict outcomes, develop strategies and draw conclusions.

Science is another area that we focus on throughout the year. As a continuation of their studies in grades 1 and 2, the children step up to the next level and learn to study science with a critical eye and an open mind. Experiments, investigations, group work and individual study make up the approach to the program.

Sport is a big part of grade 3-4 with weekly Physical Education, cross country running practice and sports incursions making up our sport program. Camp is another highlight of the year: one that the children really look forward to. It is an integral part of our outdoor education and team building programs. At Brunswick South, camp encourages resilience, risk-taking, problem solving and extracurricular skills that are essential for our students' confidence and well being.
