Grades 5-6
Home Up Our School Teaching Community News and Events

In Grade 5-6, as students move towards secondary school, there is a greater focus on independent research and learning. Students are encouraged to take ownership for their own teaching and learning, while teachers respond to their needs, interests and curriculum requirements. Our senior students are considered leaders of the school and are given the responsibilities that this role entails. We have found that given these responsibilities, students respond with enthusiasm and maturity.

Brunswick South has a clear emphasis on the school community and Grade 5-6 children are involved in programs that build a strong relationship between them and other levels of the school. Our "Buddy Program" is an example of this, where Grade 5-6 students have their own "little buddy" with whom they work during the week on projects and activities. This flows on to play during breaks where "big buddies" become mentors and support people for the preps when they need it.

Interschool sport is a big part of life in Grade 5-6 at Brunswick South. We maintain a close relationship with Princes Hill Secondary College and their students come to our school to teach sport and run training sessions with our students. This peer teaching is a highlight for our students. They love the interaction with the older students and the older students are very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about teaching the sports.

Camp is held in the later part of the year and is always a grade 5-6 highlight. It is an integral part of our outdoor education and team building programs. At Brunswick South, school camp encourages resilience, risk-taking, problem solving and extra curricular skills that are essential for our students' learning and well-being.
