The health and well being of students is a focus of our school. Brunswick South is a part of the Fun ‘N Healthy in Moreland project which promotes healthy eating, physical activity and positive body image. We promote walking or riding to school, with bike racks recently being installed to safely secure bikes during school hours. Our Ride 2 School days occur once a month and the number of students and teachers riding to school has been increasing each month. Brunswick South has “Sunsmart” accreditation which means students and teachers are required to wear a hat during recess and lunchtimes in Terms one and four. We also have shade cloths and shelters throughout our grounds to provide additional sun protection for our students. There are a number of Health programs offered at BSPS. One of the most popular is the annual visit from the Melbourne Market, which allows the students to sample a variety of different and interesting fruits and vegetables. Another is the annual “Jump Rope for Heart” program. This program raises funds for the National Heart Foundation of Australia and at the same time promotes a very popular physical activity. We have also developed an Individual School Drug Education Action Plan that is implemented across all grade levels. Personal safety, both inside and outside the home, is an issue which is addressed at all year levels. In addition, Fire Safety is a part of the Prep and Grade 6 programs, with visits from the Fire Brigade. The Preps also learn about safety around animals and around water. The water safety program is conducted when preps begin their swimming classes, to continue to build on their confidence in the water. |
