The Humanities is the study of people, cultures, societies and environments, both in the past and the present. These studies provide a framework for students to understand the world around them and the ways in which it has grown and changed over the years. In the early years, students learn about time, sequence, continuity and change by focusing on their family histories and local communities, and by comparing these to other times, places and cultures. They learn about the impact of natural and man-made changes to their known environments and begin to consider the impact of these changes on their lives. This leads to more detailed investigations about Australian history, culture, geography, economics and environment in later years. We also encourage students to learn more about their cultural heritage, and that of their classmates, and to understand the many connections between Australia and other parts of the world. A key focus in all years is on the environment and the ways in which we can learn from the past and the present to create a sustainable future. Our students are very environmentally aware, and are keen supporters of our school initiatives in such areas as recycling, water management, composting and worm farming, and riding to school. |
