Our Science program is one of the most popular areas of the curriculum. Children love to experiment and to learn about their world and how things work.  Our hands-on program gives them the opportunity to explore all areas of scientific enquiry, including chemistry, biology, earth and space science, physics and forensics. We also arrange many excursions and incursions around science themes, including an annual incursion by the CSIRO during National Science Week.

Science classes begin in Prep with the study of living things (plants and animals), the environment (weather, water and oceans), earth and space, and colour, light and sound. Chemistry is introduced in Grades 1 and 2, with slime-making and our annual "Volcano-rama" extravaganza being highlights of the year! Space science is another popular area studied in Grades 2 and 3. A website created by our students about their Space Science program can be viewed here. In the upper years, students are able to use more complicated equipment and to undertake more challenging investigations. They are also introduced to the practical uses of science (for example, chemistry in forensics, or physics in communications) as well as to the role of scientists in the community.

Science is part of the daily classroom program. We have computer microscopes and magnifying glasses in our rooms for investigating the many interesting items brought in by the children each day. We grow plants (and the occasional colourful fungus or mould) on our window sills and study and care for our classroom pets. In 2007, these include stick insects, a turtle and a rabbit. We also have a wonderful inflatable Solar System hanging from the ceiling of the Grade 2 classroom, which is the envy of all the other grades! As a follow-up to the classroom program, children are encouraged to continue their investigations at home and to share their interest in science at our Family Science Nights.
